Egypt opposition party calls for interim government

Egypt needs a period of transitional rule, new parliamentary elections and amendments to the constitution so a president can stand for only two six-year terms, the head of the opposition Wafd party said on Friday.

His comments, made in a televised statement, follow a day of violent protest calling for an end to the rule of President Hosni Mubarak, 82, in power for five consecutive six-year terms. The army has been deployed in Cairo and other cities.

Wafd, a decades old liberal, nationalist party, boycotted the parliamentary election in November saying the vote was rigged in favor of Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party.

"It is time for forming a transitional government ... (and) conducting a new parliamentary election," the head of Wafd, Sayyid al-Badawi, said in the statement.

True words, but methinks that Wafd, while facing off against Mubarak, is about to get backstabbed by the Muslim Brotherhood. One man, one vote, ONE TIME.

Did I just wake up in 1979?

Deja vu all over again, isn’t it?

I was 13 in 1979. I remember the scenes, and the feeling of helplessness, and my dad cussing out Jimmy Carter all through 1980 (even though I think he voted for him—he never said). I remember Desert One. I remember Ronald Reagan’s Inaugural Address and the Iranian hostages coming home that day to provide the final punctuation mark on Jimmy Carter’s horrible Presidency.

Yeah. Feels pretty familiar except now I’m the daddy and my daughter is the one that’s going to end up paying for the Idiot-in-Chief.

It depends. If the Egyptian military surrounds Wafd, and has US and Israeli backing, he will hold.

I understand exactly how you feel. I was 15 in ‘79. My dad (retired military) was so pissed at Carter. He’s not one to comment too much on foreign affairs but he was ready to go back on active duty if the dogs of war were to be unleashed. I’m about to retire from the army but I’m leaving my platoon behind (which I don’t like to do) and have a son-in-law still in. All our enemies know that the best time to strike is when we have a democrat in the WH.

My dad (retired military) was so pissed at Carter.

Yep...both of my parents were. (Dad is also retired military.)

And I remember how elated they were when Reagan won in that landslide election.

My dad said, "I feel like a tooth that has been hurting me for a long time has been removed and the pain is finally gone."
